For Immediate Release:

Datcon Introduces New Field Programming Kit (FPK-2) For Speedometers And Tachometers

LANCASTER, PA, October, 1996. Datcon Instrument Company has released a new Field Programming Kit, Version 2 (FPK-2), for its line of IllumaDeluxe™ speedometers and tachometers. FPK-2 is a PC-based, IBM-compatible and Windows-driven method for calibrating speedometers (based on pulses per mile/kilometer), and tachometers (based on pulses per revolution). FPK-2 replaces the prior version, FPK-1. The unit performs three functions: 1) system status check, 2) instrument calibration and 3) accuracy verification. As a result, IllumaDeluxe™ products may be easily and conveniently calibrated, in the field, to assure system accuracy and reliability.

Since equipment axle and pulley ratios, tire sizes and flywheel dimensions vary from application to application, FPK-2 provides a simple and fast means to keep IllumaDeluxe™ correctly calibrated. In addition, FPK-2 introduces a means to literally use a single IllumaDeluxe™ instrument to cover a wide range of applications which might otherwise require numerous instruments. As a result, the customer's inventory may be reduced. As an added benefit, IllumaDeluxe™ instruments eliminate the use of dipswitches, so there is virtually no chance for potential errors in calibration with the new method.

In status check mode, FPK-2 reads critical information, including:

  1. Meter type (speedometer or tachometer)
  2. Full-scale range (e.g. mph, rpm)
  3. Current calibration in memory
  4. Current reading of totallizing odometer and trip odometer or hourmeter and elapsed time meter
  5. Display error, if applicable (e.g. memory fault, calibration error, etc.)

In calibration mode, the FPK-2 provides an easy-to-follow method for calibrating the instrument (e.g. for a new engine, rear axle or change in tire size), changes to readings (e.g. when a speedometer is replaced and the odometer must be recalibrated) and appropriate warnings prior to affecting a permanent change. Calibrations can be made using a common hex wrench to adjust the trim pot.

The FPK-2 will also verify system accuracy. In effect, the unit's software simulates speedometer or tachometer signals which, in turn, will drive the pointer to full- or mid-scale on the dial to verify pointer location and, if necessary, identify a method to adjust the instrument.

The actual "kit" includes a 3-1/2" floppy disk loaded with data and instructions, an adapter cable that connects from a parallel type printer port on the back of a PC to the instrument, and a 12-volt transformer. FPK-2 is now in production and readily available. In addition, FPK-2 software will work with older Datcon FPK-1 hardware.

FPK-2 provides unparalleled convenience and maximum speed in field programming. As such, FPK-2 and IllumaDeluxe™ can provide an industry-best combination of features and flexibility resulting in more value for our customers.
